Hi Carl, Is there any way you can go through this guestbook and delete all the worthless entries that have nothing to do with DSAP? I saw the earlier post where someone was reccommended flax seed oil as a supplement to help with DSAP. Well, I have been eating raw flax seed oil mixed with cottage cheese for the past 4 months and have seen a noticable improvement in my skin. The DSAP spots are lighter and my skin looks much better overall. It's no mystery that the fatty acids contained in the flax oil can help your skin. But I have been reading the work of Dr. Johanna Budwig (Do a web search) and she discovered that if you combined the raw flax seed oil with a sulphur-based protein (cottage cheese) it creates a very powerful formula for conquering cancer and other ailments including skin disease and Immune disorders. Sound familiar? You must use a Flax oil that is Raw and Cold Pressed to get the benefit. I use a brand made by Barleans. Eat a half cup of cottage cheese with 2 tablespoons of raw flax oil each morning. You should start noticing a diifference after 3 months. I will be eating this the rest of my life to boost my immune system and fend off cancer. Since DSAP sufferers don't take well to radiation therapy it seems that the way to go is the homepathic/preventative route. Do your reseach and if you have any questions you can get hold of me [at the email at the top]. Good Luck to all of you. Greg PS-I still use my Total Block sunscreen every day. Webmasters 2 cents: Sorry. I've been too busy to maintain the website for a few months. Flax and cottage cheese sounds interesting. I'm gonna give it a try.
- What a wonderful website! I can't believe I just now found it. I'm a 48 year old female and I've lived with DSAP for years, and up until the last 5, simply accepted it as a skin condition passed on to me from my mother and her mother (one aunt and one uncle also have it....I have 2 sisters who don't). I was diagnosed by a dermatologist 5 years ago while being treated for acne (she noticed my arms and thought it might be precancer). Her biopsy results showed it was a rare but harmless disease called DSAP. (I told her it wasn't so rare as I knew 5 people in my family who had it). She suggested we wait until winter and try Effudex. I never filled the RX as I wasn't willing to have the ugliness be worse. After reading your website, I have stopped my "home remedy". Thru the years, I have found my condition improves and looks 100% better by tanning in tanning beds while wearing a 30 SPF sunblock. I did wonder though if I was doing long term damage as it seems to get worse each year. (Now I know it's sundamage and have stopped this practice) One other thing, I've had radiation therapy for breast cancer. If I think back, this is about the time my DSAP really became noticeable. Did it make it worse? Since my family has a history of DSAP, it didn't occur to me to blame the radiation for the flareup. Now for the good news. Six months ago I began taking the product called JuicePlus+. It's 17 fruits and vegatables, juiced, dehydrated, and put into a capsule. Research has shown it increases the antioxidents in the blood, AND REPAIRS DNA. After reading your website and realizing this was damaged DNA, I think that my arms actually are looking much better (without the tanning bed). I am hopeful that this product can make a differnce in the way my skin looks if I take care to keep a sunblock on. By the way, my mom and aunt are also on the product and mother was the first one to notice her arms were looking better. I will let you know how it progresses.....but could this actually be a cure for all of us? If you are interested in trying the product, I am a distributor and you can email me. Wouldn't it be great if this was really an answer to our disease?
Does anyone have any experience using Solaraze?
I heard some good things about trying to detoxify using http://www.positivehealth.com/permit/Articles/Nutrition/leach73.htm
I'm a recovered DSAP patient and I have a previous entry from 14 Oct 2002 that I recommend you read. To this day I still don't have any DSAP and it's been over a year. I made the entry previous to this one because I believe helping the body to heal itself it the only reall answer and not treating the symptoms. I don't knoe of anyone that has used this fasting technique to help with DSAP, but I think it's worth a try given the helplessness most of us have felt. Good luck everyone.
I've read in this website that DSAP that has a quick onset can often resolve on it's own just by getting out of the sun. Actually mine did at first but then without knowing what it was and continuing to be in the sun, it got worse over the years. I agree that since there is no cure yet, the key is making your immune system strong and getting your cells healthy. Processed food that is cooked pretty much destroys most of the nutrition in it. If you think about it, humans are the only animal on this planet that COOKS it's food. Most health "experts" are now saying that raw foods are better. It seems that by eating food that is processed and/or cooked we are starving our bodies of the nutrients that make our cells healthy and immune system strong. I eat all my vegetables raw now. Carrots, cabbage, broccoli, and tomatoes make a nutrient compost that kicks butt. My silver bullet is still raw flax seed oil mixed with cottage cheese which has proven cancer fighting/immune sytem benefits. The thing I like about this is that it is easy and very affordable. Most of the supplements and treatments out there are very expensive and hard to stick with. I keep seeing improvement in my DSAP. It's not gone, but is less noticable and seems more tolerant to limited sun exposure. (while using Total block sunscreen)Good Luck Everyone. Strykmaster Out.
I am 52 y.o. & was diagnosed with DSAP in my mid-thirties, just after being diagnosed with atopic dermatitis (AD). I have a few, small, slightly colored lesions on my forearms but have numerous, dark lesions on my lower legs, many of which are quite large. Since I am of Celtic descent, have very fair & thin skin, and burn when exposed to the sun, I was never a sun-worshipper. Furthermore, since I used steriod creams to control my AD flares & it thins your skin even more & makes you very photosensitive, I have been EXTREMELY careful about sun exposure for the last 15+ years. In fact, since being diagnosed with photosensitive AD a few years ago, I wear long sleeves, pants or long skirts with opaque stockings, & hats whenever I am outside year round. My legs are never exposed to the sun, yet they are covered in DSAP lesions. My lower arms, neck, & face get far more exposure, yet all I have is a few barely noticeable lesions on my arms. So to those who say that refraining from sun exposure will resolve your lesions, I say "HUMBUG"! I have been prescribed protopic for my AD & I am going to try it on my legs. I will report back with my results. However, I would like to know if anyone else knows of a link between AD & DSAP? I know both are linked to immune deficiencies. Are there any others who have both? Mine seem to have appeared at about the same time but that may be a coincidence. Any info will be appreciated. Deb
Has anyone heard of Cansema or Black salve? This is the same product, but has 2 names. It is a proven cure for skin cancer's ,moles warts ect .... I am wondering if it would be beneficial in DSAP.. I have a strong feeling it will remove the lesion's that are already present .. this product also comes in an internal form and there are many great testimonials on it ,so I am thinking it could alter or prevent new lesions from occuring .... If my job did not entail I be in the general public so much I would not think twice about trying this ,it is a herbal concoction ...and people have been using it for years ...the FDA has already tried to stop the sale of this product ,due to Dermatologist's complaing ...probably has put a cruch in their business (No ofense to any Derm Dr's.) If anyone wants to research and try look it up in a goolge search ..there are before and after photos all over the web ,testimonials TALK FORUMS where people visit daily to discuss how well it has removed skin cancer's ect .. Cansema or look up Black Salve .

- I have experienced almost all the problems of ill informed doctors, misdiagnosis and maltreatment mentioned in your article. Thanks for a good, readable report. I have found a body lotion containing 17.5% glycolic acid, Glytone, to control the lesions and eliminate occasional itching. I apply it about once per week after showering. Nobal King
Has anyone tried Accutane for DSAP? I'm thinking about trying it.
21 Jan 2004 - I've had DSAP for years and tried laser, Retin-A,freezing, and numerous other ineffective treatments. I was recently placed on Accutane for adult acne. I did not anticipate improvement in my DSAP, but noted moderate improvement, especially on my arms. I have also gotten moderate improvement from TCA peels (medium deep). Two peels per body part are usually needed to see an improvement. My insurance has covered all these treatments.

- Making my first entry to your journal. Thanks for making this forum available. Was first misdiagnosed as having foliculitus by family dr. who prescribed a steroidal cream which really inflamed the situation. Followed that up with a derm who said he knew exactly what is was and prescribed a lotion of Cleocin-T 1% which actually did improve the inflamation. Was so happy with the results at the time that I took the good DR's comment that it might take many months for the spots to completey clear. After about 24 months I visited with another derm who was surprised by my self-diagnosis of DSAP. She was sure that I was right on but wanted to verify so she took a slice and had it confirmed. She told me what I had already learned from this site that there was little promise in any treatment currently available. I asked if she would consider allowing me to try one of the newer psoriasis treatments and she prescribed Elidel (pimecrolimus) cream 1%. I am using it on several spots on one arm. Have been doing so for 2 weeks now but have nothing positive to report. Have also just begun one week ago a daily regimen of flaxseed oil/cottage cheese mixture as recommended by one of this sites wonderful contributors. I am a 44 year old male living in Texas for the past 16 years. Prior to that lived in Colorado. Experienced some intense sunburns in my youth and have had several as an adult as well. Recently discovered that my younger sister has the spots as well and she says she has had them for 20 years. Sorry for the novel.......will provide updates in future regarding the flaxseed/cottage cheese combo and the Elidel. - - Ray/Texas
16 Feb 2004 - Apparently I am a bit over excited with the 'Submit' button. The link for the above mentioned pictures of DSAP is http://dermis.net/doia/diagnose.asp?zugr=d&lang=e&diagnr=757335&topic=t Enjoy......Ray/Texas
19 Feb 2004 - DermAtlas is a very up to date dermatology data base, look at http://dermatlas.med.jhmi.edu/derm/ , and search for dissiminated porokeratosis. Henk NL
25 Feb 2004 - Has anyone tried solaraze? good/bad?
04 Mar 2004 - Just went back to the doctor this week and had a few spot frozen and was given retin a. Has anyone use Retin A? And did it help you? If the freezing the spots help i will be going back to have more done.
09 Mar 2004 -
Yes I used Retin-A without any effect at all Henk
15 Mar 2004 - Hello webmaster.. I have a question about this post 02 Mar 2003 Four days ago I had laser treatment for several hundred D S A P spots on both my lower legs. Somewhat painful during treatment but to date I have had no pain only discomfort, no signs of infection either. Very itchy though. I will bookmark this site & let you know how I'm healing in a few months time. Skin Specialist advised my legs could take up to 18 months to fully heal & I may need re treating in a decade or so. I'm 44/female/no sun for 14years/spots since 20's. Kaz Webmaster's 2 cents: Definitely report back! What does your doc say about using lasers for DSAP on arms? This person may have forgotten to come back and report.. I'll bet they wouldn't mind someone contacting them to see what the outcome was.. I know how busy you are and I would not mind emailing this person myself, I know many would love to know and I'll bet this person wouldn't mind an email reminder if it would help other's in deciding treatment regimens.

- VERY INTERESTING SITE, WAOOOOO. KEEP IT OF, GUYS, VERY EDUCATIVE AND INFORMATIVE WEBSITE.
18 Mar 2004 - To the person on Accutane I am curious to know if the improvement of your DSAP remained after discontinuing Accutane. I also am taking Accutane - 20mg once daily for acne. To those who have not seen results with Retin A, you have to use it in combination with Hydroquinone 4%. I have seen slight fading on my arms. My dermatologist says they now make a cream that combines both retin-A and hydroquinone in one tube. I will try it after I'm off Accutane. I have tried both freezing and Lazor for DSAP. derms have told me because I have so many on my arms and legs that it is more cost effective to freeze and has the same results as lazor. I gave up on this because not only did it not work on most of them, it does take about 18 months for the redness to subside and I could not keep up with all the new ones I constantly get. To the person who recommended the flax and cottage cheese, I would like to try this but I CAN'T STAND cottage cheese. I am going to try taking the flax in tablets and putting cottage cheese on an apple. What do you think about this? Do you think the apple will interfere? I am a 40 yr old female who has had this condition since I was 26. Good luck and lots of prayers to us all.
19 Mar 2004 - The Flax and Cottage Cheese Combo needs to be mixed together well. The theory is that the sulpher based proteins in the cottage cheese allows for better absorption of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids into your cells. From what I gathered, if you don't mix the two well, it's not as effective. If you make a fruit smoothe and add your flax and cottage cheese to it, you won't even notice it. Give it a try. As for me, I've been doing this for 8 months now and my skin keeps looking better. I have been slowly reintroducing my skin back to the SUN. The same doctor that swears by the flax and cottage cheese also says that after doing this for 6 months your cells are now healthy enough to benefit from LIMITED sun exposure. YES I repeat LIMITED SUN EXPOSURE!!!!!! Dr Budwig had several patients with severe psoriasis go on this mixture and then get in the Sun. Their psoriasis dissappeared. Since DSAP and Psoriasis are probably linked I decided to try. I slowly worked my way from 5 minutes to my current level of 20 minutes over a 2 month period. I never allowed my skin to burn. My skin was sensitive at first, but now it seems to be very tolerant and my skin keeps looking better. I feel way less depressed and see a huge difference. I still have old lesions but they appear to be blending in and fading. I still have a long way to go. But with how I look now, I'm never going back. After my sun sessions I cover back up and use Total Block Sun Screen (tinted). Too much sun isn't good for anybody. I know this sounds crazy and goes against the grain of anything you've heard, but my skin is looking better than ever. I have a choice right now, I can go though life depressed and white as a ghost, with red spots or go through life happy and tan with red spots. I chose the later.
19 Mar 2004 - I thought I would add some before and after pictures. The befores are when I just started eating Flax oil and Cottage cheese. The after pictures were taken today. I have been getting limited sun exposure for 2 months now. The before and afters on my arm are incredible huh? You can see the pictures by cutting and pasteing the following links:

Then just use your back button to toggle through them. I'm pretty happy with the results and will keep going. If any of you have questions you can contact me using my earlier post on Flax Oil and Cottage Cheese.
19 Mar 2004 - It does look much better . Maybe it is the flax seed and cottage cheese. I really would like to tan and have red spot's ( LOL) Except that I fear I'll make it worse in the long run. I say this because just driving make spots on my hands redf and inflamed. anyone have spots on their hands? By the way I HAVE HAD THIS SINCE I WAS 28 .
20 Mar 2004 - My lesions would glow red too with just the slightest sun exposure. After 6 months of the flax and cottage cheese regimen my skin seemed more tolerant to the sun. I use Total Block tinted sunscreen which allows for very slow tanning of your skin. Using the Total block I can wear short sleeve shirts and shorts without a problem at all. I'm going to keep going with all this and I'll keep reporting back. By the way, I also take a zinc supplement (30mg) that also is for immune system health.
Thank you so much for your response on the cottage cheese and flax! I'm looking forward to checking out your pictures. That's a great idea to add it to a smoothie. I will use that approach - I only hope it won't dillute the effectiveness. I'm very happy for you and hopeful I will experience similar results. Rene
21 Mar 2004 - Does any one know if we injest radiation when we eat microwaved food? Or what about the radiation from the laptops on our laps? And - should we be getting x-rays from the dentist? I know these are in extremely small amounts if any, but in our cases do you think it might escalate our skin condition?
21 Mar 2004 - I doubt it on the microwave and computer screen. I use both frequently and haven't noticed any escalation in DSAP symptoms.

- This is a great web-site. I thought there was no one else out there with this skin condition(except my two sisters and brother). I have ordered the manuka honey ointment and am going to start the cottage chees and flaxseed oil today. Why is this condition so badly ignored by professionals. I am 47 yr old femeale and have had Dsak dor about fifteen years. I tried the self-tanners as I am extremely fair-skinned and as previously reported by others it seemed to stick to the keratosis like glue. Then I would cover up with cover mark leg and body make up. So much work to wear a short sleeved shirt(plus expensive dry cleaning bills). I does wipe off...not to mention going to the gym and leaving your mark(literally) everywhere. I am going to the dermatologist the beginning of June(can't wait). Although I will probably be disappointed again when they say there's "no cure". This just sucks. I guess I should be happy to have two arms and two legs......BUT I WANT CLEAR ONES!! Sorry, just need ed to vent. Will write back and let you know how the cootage cheese flaxseed oil and ointment work and to let you know what the derm says. I can't wait to tell my sister about this web-site. Lets demand some research on this condition.
23 Mar 2004 - Sorry I have two more questions about the cottage cheese and flax oil. 1 - I found "cold pressed" but none of the bottles I found mentioned "raw". The check out person told me that all bottles of flax are raw - is this true? 2 - You mentioned having it in the morning. Does it make any difference if you have it in the evening? Thanks. Rene
23 Mar 2004 - annr - I feel your pain and frustration. I too feel guilty for being depressed about this condition - especially if I see someone in a wheel chair. I think the difference is we know that hearts go out to those in wheel chairs but when you have bad skin people are grossed out and assume you don't take care of yourself. I am a 40 year old female. I think the expectations of us to have a pleasing appearance are much higher than a male's, expecially when it comes to beautiful skin. Not to make light of the suffering men also experience with this condition, however, the rugged look can work much better for a man than a woman. I have had dsap since I was 26. I have seen no one else with this condition eccept my mother who didnt develope it until she was 55 - she is darker skined than I am. The honey did not work for me but I too am starting the cottage cheese and flax. Hopefully we will see some improvement together! Rene
24 Mar 2004 - Hello- I have a concern about this diet. I'm willing to try it (even though it doesn't sound very appealing to me) but from my research online about the Dr.'s diet it has a bunch or rules as well. Here they are- "1) SUGAR IS ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN. Grape juice may be added to sweeten any other freshly squeezed juices. 2) Other 'forbiddens' are: - All animal fats. - All Salad Oils (this included commercial mayonnaise) - All Meats (chemicals & hormones) - Butter - Margarine - Preserved Meats (the preservatives block metabolism even of Flax Oil) 3) Freshly squeezed vegetable juices are fine - carrot, celery, apple, and red beet. 4) Three times daily a warm tea is essential - peppermint, rose hips or grape tea - all sweetened as desired with honey. One cup of black tea before noon is fine." So I can do the oil/cottage cheese but I don't think I could eliminate al of those other items from my diet. Do you have to do that to be successful with it?? Thanks! :)
24 Mar 2004 - Hey All, believe me,I feel everyones pain and depression with this stupid skin disease that nobody really seems to have but us. Let me address a few previous posts. First, not all flax oils are created equal. The brand made by Barleans is my Hands Down favorite. Go to www.barleans.com to find the nearest store that sells it. The cheap brands of oil aren't as good and taste like crud in my opinion. It doesn't matter what part of the day you eat the 2 tblspoons flax oil and 1/2 cup cottage cheese mixture. I eat mine in the A.M because I feel like this is more a breakfast meal for me. You need to eat it every day without fail. After 3 months you should start noticing a difference in your skin as the omega-3 & omega-6 fatty acids start to make your cells stronger and more healthy. I think that answers Rene's questions, now the diet ones. The diet in the previous post is for if you have CANCER. The flax oil and cottage cheese is a preventative measure. It boosts your immune system and makes you more healthy. You can't eat sugar if you have Cancer because a cancer cell consumes 3-5 times as much sugar as a normal cell. Sugar feeds CANCER. If you don't have cancer you don't need to do that diet. Just eat the mixture of flax oil and cottage cheese. Eat lots of raw vegtables too. Carrots, Cabbage, Tomatoes, & Broccoli have tons of antioxidants that boost your immune system too. Cooking these veggies ruins their nutritional value. If you saw my before and after pictures you saw a marked improvement in my skin's appearance. The Flax Oil and cottage cheese is my Silver Bullet. One you start eating it, Keep going, and never look back. It is awesome. Your skin will look better.
25 Mar 2004 - By the way, The manuka honey ointment is worthless and does absolutely nothing for DSAP. I used it for 6 months every day and it did NOTHING.
25 Mar 2004 - I found this online, thought it was interesting-Today's Question Can Cottage Cheese and Flaxseed Oil Cure Cancer? Have you heard about Dr. Johanna Budwig and her method of treating cancer patients with flaxseed oil mixed with cottage cheese? Is it a hoax? -- Elzbieta Krysiak Today's Answer (Published 12/06/2001) Yes, I have heard of Dr. Johanna Budwig and her cancer treatment. She is a well-known German biochemist, but not a physician. (Take it with a grain of salt that her name is often followed by the fact that she has been nominated for the Nobel Prize six times. This isn’t exactly a distinction, since anyone can self-nominate or have others submit his or her name.) As I understand it, Dr. Budwig proposed her cottage cheese and flaxseed oil diet back in 1951 and supposedly demonstrated that a daily helping of this mixture plus other dietary restrictions (no animal fats, no salad oils of any kind, no meats, no butter or margarine, no sugar) would not only prevent cancer but could cure it. Her thesis is that the blood of seriously ill cancer patients is deficient in lipoproteins and substances called phosphatides (also known as phospholipids), which are special types of fats. Without sufficient amounts of phospholipids needed to form the membranes for all living cells, cancer cells can readily multiply, according to Budwig. When she looked at blood samples from cancer patients with this deficiency, instead of hemoglobin to carry oxygen around the body, she saw a strange greenish-yellow substance that she believed to be the cause of weakness and anemia in cancer. She then claims to have found that when patients ate a blenderized mixture of organic flaxseed oil and cottage cheese, the deficiencies she had noted disappeared along with the malignant tumors. All of this sounds fanciful to me. As you may know, I'm a big fan of flax seeds and I see no harm in mixing ground seeds with cottage cheese. Flax seeds provide alpha-linolenic acid, which the body converts to the health-promoting omega-3 fatty acids also found in salmon, sardines, and mackerel. Additionally, flax seeds provide fiber and are one of the richest dietary sources of lignans, a class of plant estrogens thought to help protect against breast, prostate, and colon cancers. Whether you are sick or well, I recommend adding a tablespoon or two of ground flax seeds daily to cereals, soups, salads, or rice. However, I certainly would not rely on a combination of flaxseed oil and cottage cheese as a treatment for any form of cancer. About the Budwig Diet Approach Dr. Andrew Weil
25 Mar 2004 -
- went to a new dermatologist yesterday. pretty much as apathetic as the rest of them. he gave me a prescription for solaraze. has anyone else tried this? results please. also started the cottage cheese and flax oil.hoping for the best. by the way i asked the derm about levulan. he said alot of drs. won't do it because they don't know how they'll get paid. is this true? has anyone tried this and insurance covered it. i'm thinking it's something i might like to persue(in the fall)does anyone know where they offer this treatmnet close to Rhode Island?
25 Mar 2004 - I saw the earlier post about the Flax Oil Question and saw how Dr.Weil in the post tried to trash Dr. Budwig for being a biochemist, not a Dr. Well, if it weren't for daring biochemists I think Dr's would not have most of the treatments they have now. Nutrition is paramount to good health and the good Dr. did not dismiss the benefits of Flax Oil and Cottage Cheese. Just remember this, just think how much money the cancer drug companies would lose if it really caught on that this simple food combo works. Dr. Budwig has tons of clinical data that proves her diet can cure cancer. But the big money drug companies supress the findings. My advice is be your own judge.
25 Mar 2004 - Thanks for the recent posts. They did a nice job of reflecting how I feel at times. No, this is not life threatening but it sure is unflattering and frustrating. I have been dealing with it for 20 years, have been religiously applying sunscreen level 50 and/or covering up whenever I am outside or in the car. Hats, long sleeves and long pants are my fashion statement. My kids joke about how I always smell like sunscreen. Even with all that, this stuff just keeps popping up. I have tried pretty much anything the dermatologist recommends and none have worked. I agree with the apathy part from the doctors. Mine tell me there is nothing new and nothing that has been shown to be effective, I guess the meds are to placate and being curious and hoping, I try them. I have been trying the flax seed cold pressed oil and cottage cheese, so far no difference other than my stomach telling me at times what it thinks of the combination. Sometimes I wonder why I try so hard to stay out of the sun when this stuff does look better with a little color on the skin. I agree it is good to know others are dealing with it also, since typically I feel like an anomaly and am frequently asked if I got attacked by mosquitos. Ahhhh, venting does help!!!!!
26 Mar 2004 -
- to the entry on March 25th. How long have you been trying the cottage cheese/flax oil combo? I agree these look better with color. I use a self tanner and a body makeup by covermark. I does look pretty good when I take my time and blend it in. It's just that everytime I'm doing this I get so frustrated knowing that this is not how the majority of people need to start their day. Then when it's really humid(I live on the ocean)I feel like a melting fudgcicle. What has happened to the webmaster? I see he has not made any entries for a while. If you're out there I would just like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for starting this website. I don't know why but just knowing I'm not alone makes me feel sooooo much better(I guess misery loves company). Anyway I hope people keep posting and letting us in on what works and what is a waste of time. I will be sure to keep this page posted on the CC/FO combo along with the solaraze.
26 Mar 2004 - From what information is out there. Nothing gets rid of DSAP. Freezeing and Lasers could leave you looking worse. There is nothing topical that cures it. I found the best strategy so far is good nutrition that targets the IMMUNE SYSTEM. I've been doing the Flax Oil and Cottage Cheese gig every day for almost 9 months now and there is a noticeable difference in my skin. Just look at my earlier post and use the links to see my pictures. I also am back getting limited sun exposure and feel wonderful about that too. Living like a Vampire sucks. I also take 30mg of zinc evry day and have been doing that for 3 months. Zinc is lacking in our food supply because it is all but leeched out of the soil to the point where you just don't get any in your normal diet. I don't need to get into why zinc is important for the immune system. It's critical. Finally you have to get your antioxidants. Certain raw veggies are very good for this. BTW, cooking your veggies destroys much of the nutrition in them. Make a salad Using Cabbage, Carrots, Tomatoes and Broccli. Use any Salad dressing you want. Bob's Blue Cheese is my favorite. Don't use lettuce, Cabbage is loaded with antioxidants and lettuce is not. This is what I have been doing and I am very happy with my progress right now. This is the best I have looked since I broke out with this Skin Problem 10 years ago. bets Wishes and Good Luck.
27 Mar 2004 - In response to a question dated March 18, I was previously on Accutane, noted improvment in my DSAP, and continue to see some improvement about 6 months after discontinuing Accutane. I also used Solareze on one leg as a trial. There was slight improvement. The spots were smaller and not as dark. Everyone I asked selected the correct leg as the one I used the Solareze on.
29 Mar 2004 - My friend saw a spot on the news about Spray-On Nylons. Has any one heard of this, tried it, or know where to buy it?
29 Mar 2004 - I saw the spray on ad, it was sold at dept. stores (kinda pricey) not sure which ones. I also saw an ad for Sally Hansons new spray on tan. I got this off their webiste "Airbrush Makeup made just for legs. It's like spraying on pantyhose. Legs look gorgeous and feel soft, smooth and sexy. 31 Mar 2004 - In response to Ann on March 26th I have been trying the flax seed and cottage cheese since the beginning of this year. I made a New Years resolution to try to go after this stuff again. For whatever reason, it does not sit well with my stomach. I don't mind the taste, it is just my response to it. I am continuing though, will try at least 6 months. I did want to note that Mary Kay (no I am not a Mary Kay rep and never thought I would even use it) has a body cream called Time Wise Visibly Fit. It is expensive compared to other lotions, however I have found that when I use it my skin is smoother and doesn't itch. I quit using it for awhile because I thought it might be the flax seed oil that was doing it, but it appears to be the lotion since my skin got more irritated again. I too thank the webmaster for a wonderful website and appreciate all of the information everyone leaaves in the guestbook.

- I took a low dose of Accutane (40 mg twice daily?) because my triglycerides became elevated after I started the Accutane. Four months later after I went off it, my triglycerides went back down right away. I'd like to go back on it.

- Please let us know how the airbrush tan works out. I hope that it cover up the spot. If it does i will go and buy some.
03 Apr 2004 - ok...tried the stuff..does it cover the spots? No ...and you can tell there is something on your skin ... now if your skin is really smooth it may look better ..I have dry areas where the DSAP is and for me it didn't look all that great ..it does give color though ,but does not hide the spots ...Too bad!
04 Apr 2004 - What I should have addd to the post above is that it looks pretty decent on the legs... ,but I also put it on the arms where the spots are more pronounced and that is where is didn't look as good ..I shaved the arms first and moisterized.. my daughter shaves her arms ,thats where I got the idea ..it is a thing with teens now ,shaving the arms....anyway ..I would try it and just see if I were you .... it may look good and as stated ,does look pretty good on legs.
05 Apr 2004 - Hello. I am a 30 year old female with DSAP on my arms and legs. Both my father and his mother also have it. My Dad told me about this site and I found a very good doctor in Houston from on of the posts, Dr. Chernosky. I went to see her and she confirmed I have DSAP and gave me a prescription to be filled at a compounding pharmacy. I don't know the percentages of everything but basically it was lactic acid, salylic (?) acid mixed in Eucerin. The first batch didn't work because the acid broke down the Eucerin lotion so the second batch was put in a thick cream. I used it twice a day for nearly 2 months and now I'm down to once a day. It worked wonders for the feeling/ coarseness of my skin on the spots. The redness has only lessened a tiny bit but she said that will take a long down to decrease. Also, this is not something that I'll use for 6 months and then never use again. It seems that I'll be using the lotion in some form for a very long time. My Dad is going the see her this week so I'll report on his findings in a few months.
05 Apr 2004 - Thank you so much for the posting on Dr. Chernosky! I read about her in the posting a long time ago. So I contacted her office (5 months or so ago) and the nurse said they had a compound that was working really well but could give it to a DR. So I had my dermatologist in San Diego call (I believe she was in Texas) and get the compound. My doctor called and got it & said I could try it but he would have to call and get it made up at company (the acid/lotion stuff). They couldn’t get it at a regular pharmacy. He called to get a price for the mixture and it was something like $200-300??? I thought “I just can’t afford to try it for that kind of money”. So I haven’t done anything with the info. But I would love more about how it works. If someone could say it really truly works, I’d probably buy it. I’m just too scared to waste more money (like I have in the past). Could you report back any specifics…do you know what the strengths/percentages of each item going into the compound (that way we could all go to our dermatologists with the info-I’ve since moved states and will need to find a new derm & give him/her the info)? What did your Dr. say it will do in the long run? Is it more to take the itching/redness away? Or will it ever dramatically improve how they look? Has she prescribed it to many people & how has it worked? Any additional info would help. How much did it cost you and how long with that last? THANKS SO MUCH!!! Another note-I posted the Sally Hansen airbrush spray stuff. I finally tried it once (in a hurry) and not sure how good it is. I bought the medium color and it was a little orange looking and seemed to gather in the spots like self-tanner does (gosh I hate spots). The lighter spray might work better…I’ll have to play around more when I have time. I found a really good self tanner called Savage Bronze. They sell it at Sally’s Beauty Supply for like $10 a bottle and it’s the best I’ve seen (I’ve tried them all-high end to low end). Really a true tan/not orange at all (it kinda stains hands so you might want to buy the application mitt for $2). Although it still gathers in the spots, I feel a lot better not looking so pale. The lady there also told me they are coming out with a new home version of the spray-on/mist tan. I’m not sure how it works or the cost…but I’m sure I’ll try it. She said it’s a portable sprayer and it should be out in a month or so-I’m excited. Also-anyone know of a good Derm with DSAP exp in the Seattle area-Thanks & Good luck everyone!
05 Apr 2004 - Hi.... Thanks for posting the saly hansen product.. I am interested to know if you have tried endless summer isnstant tanner? You said you've tried many ...So would like to know if you have tried that ..that is the best I have found so far and I'll try anything for 10 or 20 dollars! please let me know ...Thanks again
06 Apr 2004 - Yep, tried that one too. Pretty good color, I think savage bronze is better though. I HATED the smell of endless summer and it seemed to darken the spots the most of all tanners I tried. Neutrogena (in dark) sunless foam worked well, it didn't have the best color, but for some reason it didn't seem to "catch" in all the spots. But my favorite is the Savage Bronze, I really was impressed will the golden tan...it seemed real. Of course not as great and as real tan (I'm fair skin, but I tan great) but best I've found (and for the price $10 or so). Good luck!

- To the person looking for a Derm in the Seattle area, I see Dr. Pepper for my DSAP. She was elected one of the top Drs for women in the Seattle Mag. She's located in Renton and her phone number is 425-271-5345. I've seen at least 12 derms over the years and she is the only one who has correctly diagnosed me. She is willing to experiment and am sure she would help us out if we could get her the compound info. By the way, I go to a pharmacy in Issaquah that specializes in compounds. I too moved here from Southern California. Welcome to Seattle!
07 Apr 2004 - Well I just put on the savage bronz...It looks very choclatey ...lol ..let you know the results tomorrow ..my skin is PRETTY BAD .so be prepared..
08 Apr 2004 - Yes, please report back how you like it. When you first put it on, it collects in the spots but then when you rinse off (later or next day) it gets better. Chocolate isn't great, but I actually prefer it over most self-tanner smells.
08 Apr 2004 - Oh and i just used the savage bronzer application mitt (it's like $2) and it's great, makes applying any self-tanner a lot easier and not such a mess, It's a thin foam mitt and helps keep your hands clean and prevents streaking. Wow-listen to me..I should get a job selling the stuff...Joking!

11 Apr 2004 - Hi, I am a 38 year old woman with mild DSAP that so far gets a bit worse every year. I have it all over my body, though more on the arms than anywhere else. My mother has a severe case, and she has stayed out of the sun for years. My grandfather was always in the sun and even very late in life only had a mild-moderate case of DSAP. I have been doing three things for mine, and I'm not sure what is helping, but I thought I'd share my experience. First, I've been eating the flax oil with organic cottage cheese for about a month. Awhile ago I tried it and initially found it nauseating, so I stopped for a few months. Oddly, I started to crave it out of the blue, and I have been eating it again much more consistently. I find it's best very very cold, and I do add salt and pepper (not sure if salt and pepper are theorized to be a problem in this concoction). The second thing I've been doing is tearing off a bit of my aloe vera plant (no pills or powders) 2x/day and putting the liquid on the spots on my left arm. At first they were redder, so I stopped until a friend suggested I try lightly dabbing glycerin (from the drugstore - it has rosewater in it too) over the aloe when I am finished. Thirdly, I just keep working harder to eat fresh foods, get more sleep, and reduce my stress. Anyway - the spots are not gone, but they went from red and rough to smoother and pale tan. I am having a hard time finding some spots that were just emerging before this regimen, and several may have actually gone away or gotten very very light. I am inclined to think that flax and cottage cheese is the most helpful as my spots are lighter all over and not just on the left arm where the aloe is (also of note, my spots are now lightest on my arms compared to my legs - like the guy who posted the photos). However, I suppose that my body could also be absorbing the aloe and distributing it. I am also wondering if the person who tried regular gamma globulin shots is still on this list. If you are, did the results last after the shots stopped? That interested me because I had read a couple articles awhile ago about the terrible way DSAP reacts to radiation. But, if my memory is right, the DSAP reverted to its typical appearance after a shot of gamma globulin. I did not read anything though on repeated shots, but wondered if they would have more effect. They are an inexpensive and low-risk intervention from what I recall. It also seemed like an interesting intervention since there is a theory that DSAP is viral in some way. Has anyone talked with their doctor about it? Thanks so much for this website and for everyone's input -- it really means so much! Laura
12 Apr 2004 - I read on the flax seed oil website that you can mix yougurt with the flax oil. Has anyone tried this??? Is the effect the same as with cottage cheese?? How long before you start to see a difference??? Please advise!
12 Apr 2004 - Laura, Yes I am still on the DSAP-site. Now approx a half year after my last shot gammaglobulin I am OK. The DSAP is at a very very low level and gives me no trouble at all. Henk
12 Apr 2004 - I've been reading your website and found much of the information helpful, but also comforting. I've had this condition for 8 years and like everyone else I've been misdiagnosed. I've recently moved to California and I have a very good doctor that has given me the proper diagnosis and tried many of the treatments recommended. The latest one I am trying is Protopic. I've been using it on my left leg for 1 1/2 months and I am seeing an improvement. What I mean is the red spots are beginning to fade and I don't appear to be getting any new ones. I have lots of spots on my legs and haven't worn shorts in 2 years, so I am hopeful this will help them fade, at least slightly. I was using aldara on my right leg, but it didn't have the reaction anticipated. So now I'm using protopic on my right leg and arms also. I'll check back in a few weeks and let you know the progress. The doctor is pursuing a trial on accutane, so we may interrupt the protopic use to try accutane. I know that you can't use them both at the same time. I've also started on the flaxseed oil and cottage cheese. I have to put some pepper in there or I can't seem to eat it. We'll see how my body reacts to this, now that I have my stomach conditioned :) Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and feelings, this website has made me feel more normal than I have in years. Gladys
12 Apr 2004 - Please report back how protopic progress over the next month or so-Thanks!
13 Apr 2004 - I am the one who posted the before and after pics using the flax and cottage cheese daily for over 9 months now. To the person asking about using yogurt. It will not work the same. It's the sulpher based proteins in the cottage cheese that when mixed THROUGHLY with the flax seed oil produces the results. Dr. Budwig chose cottage cheese for that very reason. It was the best source of sulpher based proteins. Early on in her reseach I read that she used skim milk, but she found cottage cheese to be far superior. I'm glad to hear that others are noting a difference using this mixture. I'm still getting sun exposure in short 20 minute doses and some of my old spots are turning brown instead of red. I'm not seeing any new eruptions. I'm also crossing my fingers. I hope I keep looking better. I'll keep you all posted.
14 Apr 2004 - For those of us who want to do the daily flax and cottage cheese but can't tolerate the taste, I've been mixing it in a blender with the following ingredients - it actually tastes good: frozen yogurt, ice, tsp. peanut butter, 1/2 banana, tsp. white protein pwdr, choc chips or carob chips, soy milk (it's sweeter than regular milk so hides the taste better), 2 or 3 frozen blueberries. Good Luck! Webmaster: Hummm. I actually love the taste. It's just so fattening and I get this feeling that my arteries are being clogged up by this mixture.
25 Apr 2004 - Great information here! I will try the cottage cheese/flax combo. I've been suffering from this condition for over 15 years (I'm 42). In the past have tried only freezing (horrific). Found a dermatologist who has apparantly had great success with the Levulan/Blu-U protocol. He has done it to himself on his face (showed me the pictures). I have hundreds of spots on my arms and legs. He wants to start on my arms. His technique is to do a week of Effudex then do the Levulan (leave it on only about an hour or so vs. the 18 hours) then do the blue light. Am scheduled to do this at the end of the month. Unless I chicken out, I'll report back to you guys with my results.
26 Apr 2004 - I know it's easy for someone else to tell you not to chicken out but please don't. I asked my Dr about the levulan. He gave me no info except to say that Drs don't like to do because they don't know how they're going to get paid. lame excuse in my book. I hope this works for you and please keep us posted. Best of luck!!
27 Apr 2004 - I was diagnosed with DSAP about 3 months ago. I'm 32 with a "sun worshiping history". My derm prescribed Fluocinolone Acetonide ointment 0.025% What a waste of time & money THAT was. I used it on a test spot and it just made it redder and uglier. After that scary episode, I was too chicken to try anything else. However, reading the posts on this site has motivated me to be brave! The only thing I've used is St. Ives Collagen lotion. It does nothing reduce the reddish brown color of the spots, but leaves them softer and less scaly and noticable. I'd love to find a self tanner that doesn't collect in the spots so I can wear shorts without looking like a leopard. Has anyone found a good one? Banana Boat Light is not too bad if you spread it thin. Thanks, Steph Webmaster: Sunless tanners DO work (without collecting on DSAP spots) if you apply a LOT concealer (without removing any with tissue) to DSAP spots BEFORE applying sunless tanner. Basically the concealer will create a masking effect. Apply at night then in the morning wash off and finally apply concealer to DSAP spots. You'll be looking pretty normal for a few days.
01 May 2004 -
To the person who moved to Seattle from San Diego. How are you liking Seattle? I've been here for 5 years now and love it! Having this skin condition, I really appreciate the winter and the rain. If you'd like to get together for coffee please feel free to e-mail me. I am a married female, 40 years old with a 15 month old baby boy.
02 May 2004 - Other sunscreens to try (recommended by the derm I see for DSAP who is on the NYU faculty): Ocean Potion Anti-Aging SunBlock SPF 50 (as low as 7.95 on Froogle searches) and DDF Sun Gel SPF 30 (which I use on my already very oily face). The latter is not cheap (no lower than $22 on Froogle). Thus far I like both, just started using in February. I used Total Block last year. Great product, but a bit sticky in feel and a bit chalky in appearance. Webmaster: Hawaiian Tropic Ozone 70 SPF. Brand new! Only $8.99. Clothing adds another 30 SPF.
02 May 2004 - I have just put Rit SunGuard laundry treatment/UV Protectant on several long sleeve tee shirts. I will report back on how effective it is. It is recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation and the claim on the box says it boosts UPF rating of a typical tee shirt from UPF 5 to UPF 50. Has anyone else used this? Any results to report?
02 May 2004 - CORRECTION to prior post. UPF rating is boosted from UPF 5 to UPF 30. I apologize for the typo.
06 May 2004 - Thank you for the info on Rit Sun Gaurd!I've been looking for this in so many stores and no one has heard of it. Can you tell me, did you purchase it on line or did you find some place that carries it? I'm really looking forward to using this product. Are there any fabrics you can't use it on? Thanks!!
14 May 2004
I have been using a product called CG Smoothers to help cover up the DSAP. It combines a Vitamin E moisturizer, light color and sunscreen. It doesn't clog pores, provides some cover up and sun protection. It blends smoothly with the skin and doesn't cake up like makeup. Give it a try.

Hi, I have a question for Greg concerning the cottage cheese and flaxseed oil. You say mix 2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil with 1/2 cup of cottage and eat each morning. I have been to Dr. Johanna Budwig's website and the receipe there is a little different, cottage cheese, flaxseed oil and freshly ground flaxseed. Are you having good results with just the cottage cheese and flaxseed oil, leaving out the freshly ground flaxseed? I've been doing the cottage cheese and flaxseed oil, which is pretty "gross". I will make myself continue this procedure, if there is a possibility of even the slightest improvement; but want to be certain I'm am using the proper ingredients, since it does taste so awful. Would you please respond. Thank you very much. Lynn

I posted a note on 04/12/2004. I mentioned that I was currently trying protopic cream. While I was seeing a slight improvement, I believe the improvement process would be slow (6 months to 1 year). The protopic seemed to make the spots appear lighter in color and it kept the dry areas moisturized. My doctor has interrupted this treatment to start me on Accutane. This is typically prescribed for acne, but he believes it may alter my DNA and have an improved affect. He has prescribed 45mg to be taken daily and I believe the intention is to keep me on this for 6 months. I don't know how quickly he expects to see results, I will be visiting him on a monthly basis (this is a requirement for Accutane, along with monthly bloodwork). If he decides to stop the Accutane treatment, I will ask if I can return to protopic. I will keep you informed. Regarding the subject of covering the spots. I've had a breakthrough lately. Next to my dermatologist's office, there is a place named Aesthetic Profiles. They provide airbrush tanning. I know this is a local facility, but there may be someone that offers airbrush tanning in your area. I was SKEPTICAL, but I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. The technician covered the spots that were red with Vaseline. Then she sprayed the rest of my skin with a light coating of clear liquid. This intention was to bring out my natural melatonin. She wanted to ensure that the red spots were not encouraged to become darker, so the Vaseline prevented the solution from coming into contact with that area of the skin. Since the solution is clear and sprayed on lightly, it also did not collect and magnify the my dry circles of skin around the red spots. It gave the rest of my skin a healthy color and it masked the redness of the spots. My arms look great wth this method. My legs are in very bad condition and while this was helpful on my legs, there isn't anything that would allow them to look a lot better. I was just quite pleased with the look on my arms. Here in California, an air brush session costs $65. It can last anywhere from 7 to 10 days. So a little pricey for more than just special occasions. She also tried a treatment using make-up called Dermablend. SKEPTICAL again!!! It was pretty amazing. This is available at Macy's and QVC, of course you would want to make the investigation at a store to determine the correct color match. She said matching the right color was the trick. She applied a small amount to each mark on my left forearm, it was applied with a Q-tip. She was a professional, so I would imagine learning this technique would take some time. Then she brushed my arm with some powder, then she spritzed my arm with water, to get the powder to stop clinging to my hairs. This whole process caused the make-up to set. I pulled my sleeve down and wore it like that the rest of the day. I did not have any make up on my sleeve at the end of the day and my arm still looked great. When I got in the bright sun, I could see a slightly dry patch of skin that looked like it had make-up on it, but that was only in the bright sun. In my normal office lighting and at home, it looked great. I have before and after pictures from the Dermablend, but I didn't remember to take any before the airbrush tan. I've got the after photos, so in about 1 week, I'll forward these photos to the webmaster. Thanks for listening, I hope this has been helpful to someone. Gladys

This is in response to Lynn. Yes, I am having good results without the ground flax seeds. The brand of flax oil DOES make a difference. I've had some that are flat out nasty tasting. The best is Barleans. If that is the brand you are using then I can offer no better. I love the taste and my body actually craves it every day. How lucky is that? Good luck. Greg
25 May 2004
Greg, thanks for responding. I am using the Barlean's brand of flax seed oil, mixing two tablespoons very well with 1/2 cup of cottage cheese every morning. I can't say that I enjoy it, but I am faithfully eating it every day (for about two weeks now). I hope I have results as good as you have seen. Thanks for the advice.
25 May 2004
Thank you for the info on CG Smoothers! I really like the product. I was using the Sally Hanson spray on tan on my arms but like this much better as it looks less obvious.

Hi to all posters. I reviewed the recent posts and am getting to a place where I want to try some things again. The cottage cheese and flax seed combo did not work for me. Just thinking about it creates nausea. I also am wondering if the changes in the before and after pics have more to do with some sun exposure than anything else since red and tan is much less jarring than white and red. I hate to be a downer but it sure reminds me of what I look like after I have gotten some sun. ( I know, I know I should not, but I love the outdoors and always wear a level 50+ sunscreen and go out in the early part of the day.) How are the folks doing that were trying Acutane? Did it cause any change in the DSAP and were there any significant side effects. I also have Sjogrens Syndrome and am concerned about eye and mouth dryness from it. What about recent efforts with Dovonoex and Protopic? I read the webmaster's updates and wondered if others had the same experience. I have a new doctor, been dealing with this for over 20 years, and it is so nice to have one that is not completely jaded. What about the chemical peels? I had mentioned in a post last year that my mom also has this, although to a much lesser extent, had a chemical peel one plus year ago and her arms still look much improved. I would love to know how folks are doing with all of these including the flaz seed/cottage cheese combo. By the way, I mix the tinted Total Block sunscreen with a moisturizer and rub that in first, then go over it with a level 50+ sunscreen and it does a nice job of partially covering my spots. Thanks for any feedback on some of these treatments.

This is an update on my accutane treatment. I've been on this for one month now. I want to correct the dosage, I am taking 40 mg (not 45 mg as I previously stated). Both the doctor and I feel there is an improvement. While I look for the spots on my skin to lessen in color, he is looking for the dry circles to improve/diminish. He felt there had been improvement in the first month and we will continue with the treatment. I do feel the redness is less, but I will continue to monitor the progress. Regarding dryness, I didn't have significant symptoms until about the 3rd week. My lips were the first thing I noticed. They began to peal and crack in the corners. The dr prescribed Desnoide Ointment of (0.05%)to alleviate this, it has helped. I've developed a few dry patches on my face and I'm using the ointment on them as well. I have had difficulty wearing my contacts on all days. There are significant side affects, I do have blood work done monthly before my appt and compare the previous results for changes. I cannot comment further on the protopic because that treatment has been suspended while I am taking the accutane. I'll provide an additional update after my next check-up.
06 Jun 2004
Thank you for the accutane update, please keep updating! I know we all appreciate it! To the post about your mother having a chemical peel-Could you provide some more info (I'be considering that)? What type (glycolic strength, lactic acid, blue peel, and so on)? Did she have several treatments and exactly what time of improvements (less visible, less redness, and so on)? Thanks so much!
06 Jun 2004
I've had quite a few Obaji blue peels on my arms and legs. We've done two per arm and two on each part of my legs. They can only peel 10% of the body at a time, so it's a lengthy process. The peels, followed by several months of Accutane, have resulted in significant reduction of spots. My physician said chemical peels are not allowed for 18 months after Accutane, however.
06 Jun 2004
I am having very good results applying a light layer of dandruff shampoo (containing pyrithione zinc) after showering. Leave it on the skin as you apply your regular lotion. It's taking away the redness, scaliness and softening the borders of each lesion.
07 Jun 2004
Thanks for all of the responses. The Accutane sounds rather intense for me as my doctor had already expressed concern about the side effects from it. I already use eyedrops and mouth moisteners regularly and she was concerned a side effect might be a corneal abrasion. I will ask my mom about what kind of a peel she had. I do know it did not work the first time, had to be more intense, however her arms no longer have visible red spots and look much smoother more than one year afterwards. She is acutally wearing short sleeves now, with sunscreen of course. Thanks for the information about the dandruff shampoo. I will try that. This website is terrific, I don't feel quite so alone with this. Thanks again.

Help for Flax oil taste. Although I tend to like unusual tastes, this was even too much for me. I do like cottage cheese however, so tried adding about 1/2 - to 1 Tbsp. of Ranch dressing mix (the dried envelope mix like Lipton). I also like to add some tomatoes, and as a final aid - keep some crackers handy such as Triscuits or Wasa light rye crispbread. I came across this website about 3 wks ago and decided. Having tried many of the treatments mentioned here - with little to 0 noticable difference, decided to get some Barleans and give the flax oil a try. Like some others on this site - I've had DSAP for many years now - arms and legs. It was probably around 1993 when I was diagnosed and told there was nothing to do but use sunscreen. My mother also has it - though hers did not show up as early as mine did. Seems like somewhere between the ages of 39-40 those VERY light spots I had became much more noticable and quickly increased in number over the years. Drs those first years completely misdiagnosed. Within the past 5 yrs I've tried Solaraze, Retin A, and Renova without much reaction to any other than perhaps the Renova making my skin a bit smoother.

I LOVE you for starting this website!!! I've been trying for years to remind my many dermatologists to let others contact me who have DSAP, but I've never met anyone else who has it. I've been through ALL the treatments, like you, and have also been to several chiropractors and alternative healers. I gave up wheat for a while, dairy for a while (actually, I eat VERY little dairy anyway), have been trying to give up coffee, but have only succeeded for a month. (I think it takes 3 months to see results if one has food allergies). NOTHING has worked even remotely. I DO want to say that you mentioned the outline isn't visible when "wet" with lotions. Mine are actually MUCH easier to see if the lotion is white and I don't rub it in. I.E., just leave a thick white film on the skin and the outlines show up very well. Also, the wetter my skin is (water), the more the outlines are apparent. My most recent treatment was Levulan, about a year ago...right after it came on the market. They did a test spot on my arm, and then did both arms fully. The light was so hot, I was about to faint. THe nurse came in the room just in time, and got me down on a table. My BP was 160/90! (it's usually 110/60). I was very pleased with the results, but now, a year later, my skin is back to "normal" and is covered with red spots. THe tops of my thighs are the worst. IT's not from wearing dresses; it's because I was an AVID cyclist for 16 years. I rode my bicycle EVERY sat. and sunday 30-80 miles each day, and usually 20 miles two nights a week. I also used to do triathlons. I remember coming back from the Florida State Games Tri in 1986, and, as we were driving back to Ft.Myers, someone said, "what's all over your arms?" That was early on. I never put on sunscreen during a race because we were in the water first, and once I got out of the water, I didn't want to "waste" any time with sunscreen. Idiot. I wish I had known. I finally mentioned it to my mom one day, and she said, "oh yes, I have that too". YIKES! thanks for tellin' me mom! I never saw it on her because she wasn't athletic and always covered up. IT was VERY hard for me to give up cycling. IT has been my life for so long. But, I look like a friggin' leper, and it's just too embarassing wearing those cycling shorts. I wear sunscreen every day now, but my spots seem to be just worse. One of the 12 or so derm's I've seen did tell me that they would likely increase in number and severity even if I NEVER go out in the sun again...because the damage that I've done was years ago, and the results are coming forth. thank you again for this site. Where do you live? I live in a suburb of Atlanta, but lived one summer in Florida, and several years in Boulder, CO. (where I started to get my first freckles and DSAP).

Has any one heard of or tried the product Toki? It's a collagen supplement that claims to get rid of brown discolorations and wrinkles in 45 days. It's very expensive about $100.00 a month.

Thank you for the page the information has been helpful. My contribution SPF 75 by Panama Jack at $9.00 for a 3oz tube on their website. No offensive smell.

Hi to the June 15th entrant. I too live in Atlanta and love to cycle and run. I have switched to doing both in the woods (mountain biking and trail running) because of DSAP. I did however just complete a bike ride across the state, out early and covered with sunblock, spoke with a guy on the ride who cycles in all weather in long shirts and pants, planning to try that next. I have had this stuff for over 20 years and no matter how "good" I am it just continues to develop, so I decided to go back to living and hope that someday a treatment will be found. It most likely will be "by accident".

Hello, is anyone having luck with the lotion from Dr. Chernosky?
24 Jun 2004
I keep trying to get information about the lotion from Dr. Chernosky. What is it? Does it work? I tried to contact Dr. Chernosky but had no response. Please give info.

Hello! What a great day it was when I typed in "DSAP" and finally saw that someone started a website on this skin disorder!! I have had DSAP for over 10 years now. I was first diagnosed with foliculits (spelling?) and given greasy medication which seemed to make my condition only worse. After 5 years and 3 dermatologists later I tried one last dermatologist to see if there were any new treatments out. He shocked me when he said it wasnt what I was being told..it was something called DSAP and there was not a cure. I have been an avid sun lover for as long as I can remember but I was told it was more than likely the tanning beds that brought out the spots. They are most prominent on my forearms and I have clusters of 2-3 rings that have grown together to form one big ring. I too get very embarassed when people look and wonder what the heck is wrong with her! Over the past 6 months I have been taking 1000mg of Vitamin E gel caps 3 times a week orally and then applying another gel cap topically to my arms. The results have been unreal for me. The smaller spots have become less rough and healing. The larger and more prominent spots are starting to heal. You can literally see new skin growing inside of the ring. I only apply this at night because the oil from the Vitamin E really makes the spots stand out. In the morning I have been applying "Cortisone10 Plus Aloe Vera" (maximun strength) for the itch. Maybe this will work for someone else :) I will continue to read here and post and wish you all the best! Susan

Thank you to the entrant who recommeded the Vit E caps. I'm going to try that along with my Dandruff Shampoo (see my entry on 6 Jun 2004)--it's really working. This makes sense because DSAP is so closely related with the psoriasis disorders. I'm also seeing good results with hydroquinone as a skin bleaching agent on the dark spots (apply morning and night). The Visibly Fit Lotion by Mary Kay Cosmetics recommended by another entrant is also working well. I did become a Mary Kay consultant so I could get this lotion and the hydroquinone at a less expensive $$$ than retail! :) If anyone wants to talk to me more about what has worked and what hasn't since my diagnosis with DSAP in the early 90's, please e-mail me at

Has anyone tried the cosmetic "photofacial rf" treatments? Might not be a cure but they claim to help elimanate sun damage? By the way I use the Neutragena Self tanning foam (bronze) with great results. I apply it several days a week after showering. Also looking for a good Dr in Los Angeles. Any suggestions? Thanks. K

To the Vit E post, are you applying the Vit E topically 3 times a week as well? How long did it take to see some results? Any more insight would be much appreciated!

VITAMIN E...I open the capsule of Vitamin E every night and apply it to my arms. I take Vitamin E orally (1000 mg) 3 times a week. It took about 3-4 months when I started to notice the skin inside my "circles" to start healing and the outer edges not as rough as they used to be.

This is Gladys with another update on my Accutane treatment. I'm now on my third month of this drug and the doctor is encouraged by the results. Because this condition affects the dermis layer of skin (underneath), his concentration is not on the surface appearance but the health of the skin beneath the surface. While I still believe the surface (epidermis) and redness is improving, he is also encouraged by the improvement he is seeing in the dermis. The dryness conditions have improved, but I am being more diligent about drinking water. The monthly blood test results did show a slight elevation in cholesterol levels, they were slightly outside the range. He said this was to be expected and this will be one of the determining factors to the length I will remain on this treatment. He expects at least two more months will pass before he can make a determination to the long term benefits of this treatment. I, once again, asked him about the success of chemical peels. He does not recommend this process, largely because this treats the dermis and not the underneath layer of skin (epidermis) where this disease originates. I'll post again in August with an update.

Gladys, glad to hear you're getting results with the Accutane. I was very pleased with my experience. I can wear shorts for the first time in years due to Accutane and chemical peels. My cholesterol and triglycerides elevated greatly while I was on Accutane, but they dropped immediately after I stopped the medication. My physician told me chemical peels were forbidden for at least 18 months after Accutane. (Something about skin not always healing as well right away??)

Thanks for the update on the Accutane, yes please keep posting!

Hey Atlanta Mtn.biker/trail runner (who posted on Jun.22nd)!! Please email me. I'm the one who also lives in Atlanta burbs. I was going to switch to mtn. biking/trail running primarily but have to recover from two mtn. bike crashes two years ago. Unfortunately,at the time I was also leading fitness/track classes, so was unable to heal my injuries properly, and am paying the price. Anyway,I want to talk to you. Sorry, I haven't kept up with posts here, since it's hard to do, and they don't arrive at an inbox for me to see.

Dimercine. I continue to call AGI Dermatics to find out if the FDA approved their drug yet. This drug works at a genetic level. It repairs damaged DNA by getting the drug into the fat cells under the skin. If a few of us start bugging them, it may boost treatment for DSAP.

Vit E-from the post above I started taking Vit E orally (1000mg and not synthetic, natural it’s a lot better) 4 times a week and applying it to my arms & legs everyday. I cut open a gel tab and smear it on and then put lotion over it-yes I’m slightly sticky. It’s only been about 2 ½ weeks and seriously my skin has never looked better. I don’t have DSAP that bad yet, I’m 27 but I have 30 or so on each arm and about a dozen on my legs. I thought they were looking less red and smoother, but when I applied self-tanner after about a week of using the Vit E on my skin, for the first time EVER it did not catch really at all on the spots. Normally they get really red/brown from the tanner and they are smooth enough now to NOT catch! I’m thrilled. I feel like can use self-tanner now and it blends and I look better. I don’t think it’s a cure, but I think it is helping. I told my derm about it yesterday and he said…hmmm. And he wasn’t real surprised. He said many people use it to heal wounds and so on and that the exact mechanism of how it helps skin is not known, but if it’s helping definitely keep using it. I would be curious if others use it and what their results are. Good Luck!

This is Gladys beginning my fourth month on Accutane. My skin has become so smooth, if you didn't see the red spots, you wouldn't know there is a problem. Dr Westrom is still quite pleased with my results of the Accutane and he will keep me on the current dosage for another 3-4 months. The real test will be what happens when the amount is reduced, will my skin return to where it was before or stay where it is. Time will tell. Also I previously reported an elevation in my cholesterol levels, the blood results this month have my levels back below the limit. While I know elevated levels is common with Accutane, at 44 I don't want to create another problem while trying to improve my DSAP. Regarding the dryness issues, my lips continue to be dry, but Dr Westrom prescribed an ointment that has helped. I've increased my water intake and I believe it has helped with the dryness I was experienced in my eyes. Stay tuned to this channel for another update at the beginning of September.

Has anyone tried Vitamin A capsules topically or Vitamin A orally? Also, Gladys: You might have already addressed this in previous posts--but, may I ask your age? I am 42 and concerned about Accutane's effect on my blood chemistry. For outside-to-in treatments, I'm having good results with dandruff shampoo containing pyrithione zinc, vitamin E capsules applied topically and hydroquinone skin bleaching spot treatment. But I'm very interested in getting to the disorder from an inside-to-out approach. Thanks again--Lori Moore

For those using the dandruff shampoo....After showering, should you leave your skin a little moist before applying the dandruff shampoo? Do you rub the shampoo in or do you put a light layer and let it dry?

The posts on Vitamin E are interesting and make sense. This is Greg and I'm still doing the flax and cottage cheese religously. It is making a huge difference with me. My skin keeps looking better. I'm able to tolereate sun exposure without my skin looking worse. I'm going to see if the vitamin E helps even more. I'll continue to keep you posted. I'm staying away from any synthetic/medical cure because of side effects. Natural is the way for me.

Hello all. THree things: 1. Vit.E 2. Vit. A, 3. Yahoo discussion grp. for DSAP sufferers: 1. I've been using vit.E oil I buy at Kroger or Publix (which are the large grocery chains in the SE). It is pure vit.E oil, but less sticky than the capsules, and easier to work with. A pump bottle of 2.25 oz. is less than $4 generic. It's 30,000IU. I think it helps some, but not much. I must admit I have not applied it daily for more than a week consistently. sometimes I shower at the gym and don't have it with me. 2. Vit.A samples were given to me years ago by a derm. I noticed no difference. 3. If you haven't already, please feel free to join our discussion group at www.groups.yahoo.com/group/DSAPskin This site, dsap.net, is excellent indeed!! however, the discussion group is there just to make it easier to talk back and forth with one another.

I am using the dandruff shampoo, and I use it as a softener, after cleansing, when I shave my legs (instead of shave gel). I also apply it to my arms and rinse it off. Every time I think about it (usually every other day), I mix the shampoo with water in my palm to dilute it and leave it on to dry on the effected areas of my skin. I then apply Mary Kay's Visibly Fit Lotion and followed by the bleaching agent. I top that off with the Vitamin E oil. But I am experimenting with breaking open Vitamin A capsules made with fish liver oil on some of my spots--just as an experimental spot treatment to see if I see any improvement after 3 weeks. I'll visit the yahoo discussion group site as soon as possible.--Lori Moore

For several years I have had bumps on my buttocks which have gotten worse over the years and spread and hyperpigmented to hard dark areas with bumps on the buttocks. THey are very painful. Now they have spread to my upper back near my neck and my neck and chin area. They have left awful scars. Doctor after doctor did not know what they were, until my Dermatologist now say it is foliculitus, caused by a hormone problem. No test were given and both topical medications he has given me has not healed the sores. But the acid did take some of the black scars away but created awful pink scarring. Does this sound like foliculitus and do I need an oral antibiotic?
